Getting Started

System Requirements | Navigating the Database | Picklists and Drop-down Menus | Number of Results to View

I. System Requirements

  • For best results, COS recommends specific Web browsers in order to take full advantage of all the features of these databases.

  • Your Web browser must be "cookie-enabled" in order to properly access and use COS products. See our Web page explaining cookies for more information.

II. Navigating the Database

  • You can access the Help documentation at any time by clicking on the 'instructions' button on the COS tool bar at the top of every screen.

  • The 'clear' button will erase all information currently entered into all fields on the search form.

  • When you are finished constructing your search query, click on the 'Do the Search' button to carry out the search.

  • On the list of results page, click on the 'Next Page of Results' button to view results (if any) beyond those shown on the current page.

  • You can contact COS with any problems or questions by clicking on the 'help desk' button on the COS tool bar at the top of every page. This will take you to a feedback form that you can fill out describing your problem or question.

III. Picklists and Drop-down Menus

Many search forms offer picklists and drop-down menus of words or phrases to help you formulate queries.
  • To activate a drop-down menu, click on the term in the box or its adjacent down arrow.

  • To select a term, simply click on it. Clicking on a second term will deselect the first term.

  • To search on multiple terms (for picklists only): hold down the Ctrl key (the Apple key for Mac users) and click on each desired term. All selected terms will be highlighted. Do the same to de-select a term.

  • If no terms are selected from a picklist, the search system will not limit the search in that field (i.e., all terms will be searched on). Note: This excludes the Date Range picklist.

IV. Number of Results to View

Use the Number of Results drop-down menu to select the number of search results, or hits, that you wish to display.

You can choose from 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 or 1000 hits. The default is 25, meaning that the first 25 hits will be displayed if you do not select a different number.

If the search generates more results than you have chosen to view, use the 'Next Page of Results' button to view the additional records.

Refer to the top of your result table for information about how many hits were generated and how many are currently displayed.
